Top 5 Sailing Destinations for 2018

By September 13, 2019 Blog

Looking for holiday ideas for 2018? Been sailing before but looking for new places to go? Then here are a few destination ideas that should get you started on your search for the perfect summer holiday:

1. Split, Croatia

One of our original destinations when we started The Big Sail was Split in Croatia, and it is still one of our most popular routes to this day. Croatia boasts beautiful coastlines, great food, comfortable short-hops between islands, modern marinas as well as stunning anchorage spots if marinas aren’t your cup of tea! Starting from Split or Trogir (both very close to Split airport), sail between some of the most talked-about islands Croatia has to offer including Hvar, Vis, the Pakleni Islands and Brač.

This route offers everything from quiet towns with fantastic hidden restaurants (Villa Kaliopa, Vis) to some of the best nightlife in Europe (Carpe Diem, Hvar) so there really is something for everyone, and perhaps this is why Split is still one of the most talked about sailing destinations in Europe. If you haven’t been already – what are you waiting for? Book now for this summer!

2. Montenegro

Montenegro has been described as the “St Tropez of the Adriatic”, and is certainly on an upward trajectory as a sailing destination. From the impressive old town of Kotor to the stunning beaches near Budva, Montenegro and it’s backdrop of Balkan Mountains is the perfect sailing destination for someone that has been everywhere and looking for a new adventure, as well as those of you looking for somewhere “off the beaten track”.

This picturesque country is best visited between May and October and we have both luxury and more affordable yachts on offer.

3. Corfu, Greece

Greece provides many options for anyone looking for history, culture, and sunshine. Corfu with its Old Town UNESCO world heritage site and impressive fort on the waterfront, is a fantastic place to start your next charter. You’ll find lots of attractions to interest everyone, from historical tours and water-sports centres, to great traditional restaurants and stunning anchorages.

The small island of Paxos is only a short-hop south from Corfu and well worth the visit, and if you’re feeling ambitions you can head down to Lefkas too. Other highlights include anchoring near Sivota Mourtos with it’s lush green bays and sailing north from Corfu Town towards Kasioppi to find Toula’s Restaurant at Agni bay – a rare hidden gem!

4. The (recovering) BVIs, Caribbean

After the devastation of Hurricane Irma, most of our partners in Tortola have already re-opened their doors and are getting back on their feet with new yacht deliveries. The islands are once again open for business, and because of a large number of bookings that were cancelled in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, there is a lot of availability between January-April and it may be a once-in a lifetime opportunity to visit the area on a more peaceful charter with quieter anchorages before the crowds of yachts surely return next season.

Divers have confirmed that most of the well know dive sites including The Indians and the wreck of The Rhone are largely untouched, and as well as being able to explore this amazing Caribbean destination in more seclusion than in other years, any groups who book charters to the British Virgin Islands this spring will be welcomed by locals with open arms, as tourism helps bring money into the local economy which further helps the remaining recovery effort.

5. Dubrovnik to Split, Croatia

Dubrovnik and Split are both stunning cities in their own right, and they happen to be the perfect distance from each other for an achievable and enjoyable one-way charter. A one-way sailing holiday allows you to fit in many of Croatia’s highlights in an action-packed adventure with stop-offs including the stunning national park on Mljet Island, the walled town of Korčula often referred to as a mini-dubrovnik, Hvar and Vis as well as Dubrovnik and Split themselves. With our recommended itinerary you could enjoy visiting a different destination every single day and enjoy wine-tasting, exploring ancient towns and cities, sunset hikes and some of the finest cuisine that Croatia has to offer. This is one of our favourite routes and we cannot recommend it more highly!
